Holi Phagwah Festival of Colors, Orlando, Florida 2008
Some cultural events are to celebrate a holiday, while others hold religious or historical significance. Some are just for fun, and some pass by un-observed. Then, there are cultural events that stand out as something of great importance, an even that brings people together for a cause. Charlie was proud to participate in one such event, the Guianese-Indian holiday called Holi in Hindi, or Phagwah in Bhojpuri, which translates to the "Festival of Colors." It is a celebration where people spend the day throwing colored powder and water at each other, in celebration of the coming of Spring (and their new year), wherein everyone is made the same color, so as to show unity and togetherness of man. The entire holiday is associated with a loosening of social restrictions normally associated with caste, sex, status and age, allowing for everyone to be the same, and celebrate the many colors of spring, and the end of a dark winter. Charlie was greatly honored that the people who were celebrating this holiday at Festival Park in Downtown Orlando quickly and graciously included him as one of their own, coloring him, and calling him a part of their community.
